Hi Friends,
Today, while I write this blog, we are already in August 2012. And I am going to talk about my assignment that I completed in January 2012. Yes, there is lot of back log :) and I have made it a point to clear by back log before I do anything else, really !
This was my first assignment this year, and there could not be a better topic to start with; High Availability. This assignment was delivered to one of the largest consulting firms in the world in God’s own country, Kerela !
This SQL Server training assignment in India was organized by Peopleware India – www.PeoplewareIndia.com
Prior to this assignment, I completed an advanced SQL administration and performance tuning assignment in Hyderabad in December 2011 – you can find that blog here:http://www.sqlservergeeks.com/blogs/AmitBansal/sql-server-bi/556/completed-advanced-sql-server-database-administration-performance-tuning-hyderabad-december-2011
Back to this assignment, it was for a large consulting firm and their IT division supports their mission critical operations and also provides support to their customers & partners. SQL Server is used heavily and the enterprise relies on the availability features in the product to ensure maximum uptime of their mission critical applications. Failover Clustering, Database Mirroring, Replication, Log Shipping was the main focus in this assignment.
I particularly enjoyed setting up the cluster in Hyper-V. It was good a discussion around what really Failover Clustering protects. New DBAs are always under this myth that FC protects data as well, which is not true. We also discussed FC implementation and I talked about the entire setup including, DAS vs SAN, HBAs, network switches, connectivity, (the entire fabric), controllers, etc. We had discussions on different RAID levels and someone made a comment: “Put more money and you get the best” – a pointer to RAID 1+0 :)
This was a 3 day workshop and I thoroughly enjoyed working with the participants. The audience was so focused, and I was glad to make new friends, as always.
I loved interacting with the folks; they made an excellent class.
Here are is the Pic from the class:

My next assignment was with Microsoft India Development Center at Hyderabad and I will write about it shortly.
