Many of you know that SQL Server 2008 R2 can be installed side-by-side with SQL Server 2008. SQL Server 2008 R2 is a minor release. Since both the versions share the same major version, R2 installation will automatically upgrade the shared components between the two versions. In case you are planning to install R2 along with 2008, you should check out this link:
